CRA

The CRA will be participating in the Florida Redevelopment Association’s “Housing as a Redevelopment Tool” course in Lauderdale Lakes on Friday, June 22nd.

The CRA will also be attending the annual Managers Meeting in Lake City on Friday, June 15th.

The CRA and our local Quilt Trail Representative will be going to Trenton on Friday, June 8th to explore the potential of creating a walking tour and to collaborate with the Florida Quilt Trail to incorporate local quilt murals that will be hung within the CRA in Downtown High Springs.

The CRA is working to update and expand the CRA Boundary and Plan and may have additional workshops TBA following the workshop on Thursday, May 31, 2018. Any citizen that is either a property owner or resident of the Douglass Neighborhood that would like to serve on the Douglass Neighborhood CRA Advisory Board is encouraged to contact the CRA at [email protected] or (386) 292-3921.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

May was a busy month for your High Springs Firefighters, responding to 177 calls for service, a majority of which were EMS (Medical) calls. 141 of the 177 calls HSFD responded to were within the corporate limits of High Springs.

Work continued this month on our initiative to become an Advanced Life Support (ALS) fire department. This means Paramedics would be on-board HSFD’s two front-line units, enabling advanced pre-hospital care to begin without relying on an ambulance to be present. High Springs Paramedics would have the ability to administer potentially life-saving drugs prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

Rounding out the month, through a partnership with Alachua County Emergency Management, a WeatherSTEM weather station was installed at the fire station. WeatherSTEM includes real time weather information, forecasts, live camera, educational weather activities and more. WeatherSTEM is available through Facebook, Twitter or by downloading the WeatherSTEM App through Google or Apple.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The High Spring Police Department recognized our own Explorer Post # 599 for their outstanding community service to the City of High Springs on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the High Springs Community Center.

Enforcement Exploring also known as Police Explorers, is a career- oriented program that gives young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement by working with local law enforcement agencies. Founded on July 12, 1973, it is one of the exploring programs from Learning for life, a Non-Scouting subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America.

 

 

HSPD Police Explorers should be commended for their hard work and dedication to the Police Explorer program and for making HSPD Police Explorer Post 599 a success.

PARKS & RECREATION

The Month of June begins the period of open recreation as we replenish our programmed facilities to get them ready for fall season.  
 
The sports complex will be experiencing phase two of its sod renovation and will be open for programmed events, and to walkers using the walking trail only for the month of June.  We are grading the front soccer fields and then we will be growing turf from July 1- October 1.  
Adult softball registration for the summer season has been released!  The registration is available online and the REGISTRATION DEADLINE is  June 5, 2018 6:30PM.  There will be a mandatory captains meeting at the sports complex  on June 5th at 6:30 PM and captains are available to turn in registration at the meeting if they were unable to turn in registration beforehand to city hall.  
We hope to offer some karate classes this summer so stay tuned and refer to the parks and rec facebook or the city website for updates on our summer rec programs.
The lights at the sports complex have been installed!  We have about three weeks left of the irrigation project and hope to have the park 75% operational July 1st and 100% operational October first once the turf is complete.

UTILITY BILLING/FINANCE

Tag Office – Don’t forget, you can renew your vehicle registration and process title work here in our office. Our office opens early at 7:30 and closes later, at 6:00, Monday through Thursday.  This allows citizens time prior to and after regular work hours to take care of their motor vehicle needs.

Finance –  We will soon be preparing for next year’s budget.

Utility Billing – Utility bills are due on the 15th of each month.  You may have received a utility application in the mail, we are in the process of updating all customer accounts and ask that you fill it out and return to City Hall at your earliest convenience.  The City of High Springs City Commission will consider proposed rate increases for commercial solid waste during a public meeting scheduled on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at City Hall (23718 W US Hwy 27) beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The proposed rates include recommended changed to commercial customers for solid waste.  If approved by the City Commission, rate changes would go into effect July 1, 2018.

City of High Springs Yard Waste Compliance procedures.  All yard waste should be placed at the curb for collection in either recyclable paper bags or containerized in small trash cans (not your trash cart or recycling bins).  Small tree limbs do not need to be containerized and can be placed at the curb loose for collection.  However, small limbs SHOULD NOT exceed 5 feet in length, 5″ in diameter or exceed 50 pounds.  The City along with WCA appreciate your willingness to follow the yard waste collection procedures.

PUBLIC WORKS

Water department – You will see our Water Department workers out and about, as they continue the flushing of fire hydrants.  Meters readings took place May 16th – the 21st, rereads were done on May 24th and shutoffs were conducted May 29th and May 30th.We have sent off the samplings from the Lead & Copper testing that is being conducted and we are awaiting the results of those tests. We would like to say a HUGE Thank You to all those who participated in this testing.

Sewer department – The Camp Kulaqua Sewer project is nearly completed. The septic tank abatement project is done.  We have accepted bids for the Sewer and Grinder Pump project for the Southside area. We expect work to begin in the next 4-8 weeks.

Streets department– Streets department has completed the chipping and hauling off of the storm debris. You will see the crews out and about patching pot holes around the city. Keep in mind, the weather and emergency calls may cause some delay in this process.
